The Municipality of Fyli has the largest landfill in Greece and the only one existing in the Attica region, which covers the needs of 4 million inhabitants. The Municipality’s priority is to redevelop and make good use of it, not only to ameliorate its environmental footprint but also to ameliorate the quality of life for its citizens.
Energy and Hydrological independence, as well as the elimination of the phenomenon of energy poverty, are the main priorities of the Municipality. In collaboration with the Attica region, the national authorities, and with funding from the ERDF, Fyli has installed photovoltaics at the landfill and is transforming it into a model energy park, that will have 10 MW photovoltaic panels, in addition to biogas production. Thus, a green lung will be created in the Municipality, and with the energy that will be produced, its citizens will eventually have free electricity. For this reason, the Municipality created the first energy community, which aims to support 800 vulnerable low-income families who are at risk of energy poverty.
The adoption of the principles of circular economy is a conscious choice of the Municipality, in order to meet the new challenges, to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal, and to provide new social services in case of crisis. Fyli aims to produce free electricity for all its citizens, especially during this crisis period, when consumers must be protected from the dramatic increase in prices. The total budget of the project is 11 million euro.
